We Recognize the Importance of Sustainable Milling Practices

Home Grown Lumber Works with Local Power Company to Reduce Wood Waste

Recongizing the importance of implementing sustainable milling practices, since 2006 Home Grown Lumber has worked in partnership with Pine Tree Power, located in Tamworth, New Hampshire. All waste is trucked locally to Tamworth and used to generate power for the Tamworth facilites' customers. The result is wood ash is that has been reduced to less than 1% of the volume of the original wood chips.

As the Pine Tree Power web site explains, "The wood ash from wood chip fired power plants is an environmentally sound, nutrient rich soil supplement. It sweetens soil by reducing acidity, and supplies calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and various trace elements essential to plant growth. Under a state approved plan, the ash that Pinetree Power produces is available to local farmers with ten or more usable acres. Private haulers deliver free ash to farmers, who spread it on fields or plow it into the soil. This encourages growth while keeping farmer's costs down and crop prices competitive. The New Hampshire Bureau of Public Health and the U. S Department of Agriculture regulate the ash program. "
